Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Commentary

As human beings we are wired to create mental “images”. When I use the term image in this context I have an expansive concept of image that includes engagement of all of the physical senses as well as emotional senses such as joy, appreciation, hopefulness and enthusiasm. According to the Revealing Word an image is “A mental representation of anything not actually present in the senses” (Webster). Everything humans create is first created as a mental image before it is formed in manifest three dimensional forms. We form pictures in mind using the faculty of imagination. Often we may think of imagination as just a picturing process. However, it can be much more; it is actually a powerful faculty of creation.

Commentary
The First Commandment and Prosperity’s 1^st Affirmation are foundational.  A prosperous life is based on the idea that all that we need and want material and non-material, visible and invisible; comes from God, Omnipresent Substance.  When we think of God as Creator, we often think of God as a Being of infinite intelligence and wisdom, designing and fabricating the Universe.  It is helpful to think of God in less anthropomorphic ways as well. We can think of God as the underlying Substance from which everything is made.  In contemporary terms, we may conceive of God as the Law(s) governing the behavior and activity of all that exists, from sub-atomic particles studied in Quantum Physics to the behavior of very large phenomena such as solar systems, galaxies and nebulae.  For our purposes we will consider the truth of scripture, particularly as presented in Exodus as the 10 Commandments and internalize the truth we learn and practice it in our individual life, adjusting our practice to experience the results we intend.  When we perfect the practice of behaving as if God is the Source of our wealth, our health, our peace, our wisdom and all else that we need to live a joyful, and meaningful life; we will have mastered our relationship with God and our relationships with other people.
